RRII

Ariam tended not to pick favorites among her charges, as hard as it often was. The strange, little creatures under her care had such a variety of appearances, personalities, and ideals that it was impossible for her not to latch onto one or two from each batch.

It wasn’t as if these chosen members of the dragoness’ people’s resocialization program were given any special treatment beyond the others. It simply meant that she’d taken a greater interest in them, whether it be because of a felt mutual curiosity, a broken spirit Ariam wanted desperately to mend, or a mere hunch that the particular human—as they called themselves—was in need of a different approach to the standard Reconstruction, Reconciliation, and Integration Initiative Field Manual-approved techniques.

In the latest group, there was one in particular who’d caught her attention as someone fitting this criteria. She hadn’t noticed immediately during the introduction phase, where the humans were shown their temporary home and introduced to their guardian; it was only after a several days of catching the particular human’s eyes glancing her way and the way he seemed less afraid of her than the others that made Ariam add him to her list of “favorites.”

It was also what led to the little creature, barely the size of her thumb, lying asleep in her open palm as she relaxed after a long day of interviewing and report-writing. Technically, what Ariam was doing was against the rules (RRIIFM-50/6.2 explicitly forbade “bringing a human participant outside of designated safe areas without consent from both the participant and the monitoring Initiative Task Officer”), but her overseer didn’t mind her bending of the rules. She was among the best of the RRII’s personnel, after all.

The human quietly rolled over against her soft scales, bringing the dragoness’ attention down to his resting form. A gentle smile crept across her features, and she couldn’t help reaching over to lightly stroke the tiny mammal’s back—as the base of her occupied hand’s thumb had been repurposed as a pillow by her charge.

It was almost impossible to resist that urge; the little creature was far too cute, especially when asleep. Of course, Ariam had asked if he minded being petted, as she was concerned it was too possessive or demeaning. He’d said it was alright to do—and admitted to actually liking how it felt—but she still sometimes felt uneasy. Everyone had heard the rumors of what had happened during the war, unspeakable violations of the dignity and lives of their smaller peers…it was something she hoped to never emulate, intentionally or otherwise.

Like many others, she hoped that was all in the past. The RRII was merely one small step towards a better world for everyone, but Ariam hoped that through her interactions, she could have a much greater effect on the individual lives of the humans temporarily placed into her care. Like the one resting in her palm, his breaths slow and calm, as if he were just asleep in a regular bed rather than in the hand of a building-sized dragon. That such a situation was possible gave Ariam hope for the future, for both of their kinds.
