It was a cold winter's day as a group of friends drove on the long highway ahead of them, most of them hungover from the party they had last night. It was misty outside, without any sight of another vehicle driving over the cold asphalt. It gave a sense of peaceful loneliness to the group as the two people in the back seat stared blankly outside their windows counting road signs.
"Shit, we're almost out of gas." the driver muttered to himself. His friend next to him quickly grabs a map to find the nearest gas station in the void wherever they may be.
"In a few miles there's one on the exit lane. Shouldn't be too far ahead." he told him, quickly folding back the map and hiding it in the dashboard before giving the driver a pat on his back. "Gas is on me this time. Just make sure to drive safely."
The driver nodded as he slowly made his way towards the exit lane. Should have enough fuel left to get there, he thought to himself.
A few minutes later driving through the abandoned road and still no signs of the gas station the group was desperate to find. What's worse is that the piles of snow next to the road gradually began to rise, slowly blocking out the view. The group kept driving onward, hoping to get there before their fuel tank eventually depleted.
More minutes pass. Still nothing. Right before the group argued whether it was better to continue, they came in sight of something unnatural. The forest that they've driven through for the last few minutes seems to expand gradually, trees rising up to the sky and becoming much, much larger than anything they've seen before. A few of them anxiously shivered, being frightened of this weird place. It almost felt like they've shrunken down compared to this place, driving through the road like an ant reaching towards his colony.
Half an hour inside the gargantuan snowy woodlands and the car engine finally gave up pushing the last drop of fuel through its system. The driver sighed, head resting on top of the steering wheel. "That's it guys, we're miles away from home, a gas station nowhere to be found, and the car is fucking dead."
The group quickly exited the vehicle, looking around trying to find the gas station which was supposedly on the map. Nothing but snow and giant trees towering in every direction, with miles of roads stretching out into the mist. “Guess we’ll have to walk, then.”, one sighed. The group agreed to move forward, leaving their car behind to get a tank of gas from the station. Surely it must be close, right? They don’t have anywhere else to go anyway since their car’s busted. So the group of friends decided to grab an empty bucket from the trunk of the car and hopefully come back with it filled after their trek through the mist.
It’s been another hour. The road seemed to stretch out endlessly. Were they even making progress? Hungry and tired from walking, the group continued walking onwards through the cold road, until they found what appeared to be an intersection.
“What the fuck is this?” One of the people stumbled out in pure confusion.
For some reason, the giant pile of snow clogging up both sides of the road seemed to abruptly stop for multiple yards. Piles and craters of snow cover this intersection, as if it were to be a road walked over by giants. But the stories of macro sized folk were just fairy tales, right? The group shivered, edging closer towards one of these gaps. It turned out their folklore stories were true after all…
Two of the group screamed in fear as they saw the shape of what appears to be a giant footprint pressed in the snow. The toes were twice the size of any of them. The others quickly tried to calm the shivering friends down, who were now curling up and cowering in fear.
“Don’t worry man, it’s probably a sick prank someone might have pulled. Y’know, with these abandoned roads ‘n all.”
“Then how do you explain these giant fuckin’ trees?!” the shivering creature screamed out. His face was in tears from fear. Running away would be useless. He was too tired from the panic and stress overwhelming him to even move a slight couple of inches forward.
The other two folks started getting worried as well. Maybe it wasn’t a prank. Maybe the stories about giants roaming the world were true. After all, why were they the only ones on this abandoned road? It’s been hours and they haven’t seen a single other car.
Their questioning thoughts have been answered shortly after by a soft booming quake shaking the ground beneath them. The group looked up in fear, wondering where it came from. Another rumbling. This one is louder and heavier than the previous one. And another one. The two who were panicking started screaming out in fear as the others turned their faces to see what they were pointing at.
A giant, barefoot elk, clothed with jeans and a plaid sweater, came stomping towards them, on the same path they were on. His massive, 5-toed humanoid feet raised to the sky with each step, and crashed down onto the snowy floor, giving another shockwave towards the group. He seemed to be unaware of their presence, smiling while walking through the woodlands.
“He-He-He’s fucking massive! Oh my fucking god!” one screamed out. “L-Look at the size of his feet! We’re all gonna die if we-”
His voice was immediately cut off as the next footfall bounced the four friends onto the asphalt, bruising their arms and legs. Just a single step of that giant elk foot now had the capability to throw them high up in the sky. The barefoot elk neared closer and closer, his mighty presence casting a huge shadow over to the group.
“I-I-I can’t feel my legs!” one cries out. His leg broke from the fall, slight pieces of bone sticking out. Another one looked at the horrific sight, and gagged seeing a pile of blood pouring out and quickly freezing because of the cold temperature. The bloodied ice glued his leg to the ground, causing him to not be able to move any inch. He was helplessly pinned.
The other three rushed quickly to him, crawling on the floor from their injuries while desperately trying to pull their friend off the asphalt. It was already too late. Another step of the barefoot elk sent the three flying into the air. They smashed on top of them, gaining more fractures and injuries. The four couldn’t do anything but look up to the sky. Scared, but not wanting to alarm the giant, they started sobbing from the pain. If any of them screamed God knows what he would do to them. Frightening thoughts of the elk crushing them between his teeth for a quick snack. Tears rolling through their faces as the next torrent of stomps just bounced them up and down.
The giant elk’s bare feet came closer to them. Already getting a good sight of his soles as he walks, the four could only hope that he would make a swift end to their suffering by crushing them underfoot. Massive wrinkles and bits of pine leaves covered his sole. It was a terrifying sight to behold. Sooner or later, the group would be joining the debris as smudges under the elk’s foot.
One of the four desperately tried to grab his phone, switching to the camera to film the gargantuan beast. He quickly tossed it away however, as there was no connection to be found. It was a dumb idea anyway. They’re in the middle of nowhere. He couldn’t help but think how many people tried to film the beast only to be met with the same connection issues he had.
The elk’s foot inched closer. He was one step away from pulverizing the group. He took his last step, the giant, 5-toed sole towering over them. Bits of debris, snow and leaves fell down on them. At least they got a perfect sight of that elk foot. Some of them couldn’t help but feel excited that this was their way to go. The giant elk creature looked handsome, and even though they couldn’t see much else other than his giant sole towering over them. they still got a glimpse of his endearing smile on his face.
CRUNCH.
The big, meaty sole finally landed on top of the asphalt, popping the four fragile bodies underneath his foot like they were mere bugs. Four splats of blood splattering over his mighty soles. The elk’s bare foot dug deep into the asphalt. He raised it, looking back at his sole while still standing tall.
“Fuckin’ bugs.”
These were the only words the elk said before wiping the dead bodies off his sole. Wiping his bare foot over the snowy asphalt, the corpses were quickly disposed of as a pile of flesh with snow turning red from the blood. Only a slight smudge remained, four blood specks where the group once was stomped on.
The elk scratched on his horns before moving on, walking through the snow again creating more foot-shaped craters in the snowy road. Swiftly returning with a full can of fuel from the gas station, hoping he’d encounter more of the bugs lost inside their territory.
Spreading those maps around was a fantastic idea.
