Under Callie's Foot

Callie’s Sweets and Treats was a cozy little bakery on the far end of a bustling outside mall. Inside and out, the whole store had an atmosphere that warmed one’s heart with a cuteness that was just begging them to come inside. The enticing smell certainly helped one feel welcome too, the delightful blend of myriads of different baked sweets hitting one head-on if they step too close to the storefront. Despite all this, despite the fact that it was the middle of the afternoon on the weekend, Callie’s Sweets and Treats was completely and totally empty. All except for two people.

The first was the owner of the bakery, a Hisuian Zoroark by the name of Calliope, though most people just called her Callie. She is also the reason that the bakery was almost always devoid of customers. Most people found that the sight of a nearly ten foot tall Zoroark with a terrifying stare was enough to make them turn tail and find some other bakery. Nonetheless, she always kept the store filled with freshly-baked sweets, even though there was never anyone around to eat them.

Today, however, Callie wasn’t alone in her bakery, she just didn’t realize it. There was a high, high shelf in the corner of Callie’s kitchen that hadn’t been touched or even thought of in a very long time, and perched on top of it was a small green lizard. His name is Rellow, and right now, he’s only three inches tall. At first he had snuck into the bakery out of curiosity. How could he not be hooked when he heard there was a towering beast, running such a dainty little bakery? So Rellow thought he would make like a borrower, shrinking simself down from his usual three-and-a-half foot height to see just how scary this baker really was without them spotting him. He had been there since opening and it was halfway through the day, but still, Rellow wasn’t sure what to think so far.

It was easy to tell how anybody would be intimidated by Callie in the first few moments of seeing her. WIth her imposing height also came powerful footsteps, shaking the entire bakery every time she walked and making Rellow feel scared of being caught underfoot even though he was a good distance above the Zoroark. In the few hours that he had been watching her, Rellow hadn’t seen her blink once. Those wide, bright yellow, piercing eyes… just thinking about them sent shivers through Rellow’s body. At some points, Rellow found himself entranced by Callie’s hair. She had a very full, pale white mane that turned blood-red at the tips. The way her mane moved almost seemed to defy gravity, and that was Rellow thought before he saw that Callie could control it, using the tendrils of her hair to stir two bowls at once or carry more trays than should be possible.

It was all a lot to take in for sure, Rellow thought to himself as he peered down at Callie’s work, but there was no evil plotting, no eating people, no bitter malice baked into the cakes. Callie was just baking, and she was good at it too. As the day went by, tray after tray of lovely looking sweets filled the bakery, and it was getting harder and harder for Rellow to ignore just how wonderful each and every one of them smelled. Right now, Callie was putting the finishing touches on a tray of soft-looking and sweet-smelling cupcakes while Rellow was having trouble hearing his thoughts over the sound of his own grumbling stomach.

The little lizard watched intently as Callie set the tray of cupcakes, still warm and fragrant, on the kitchen counter. The massive Zoroark took a second to look over her work and Rellow could’ve sworn he saw a hint of a smile on her face when she did. The only thing for Callie to do know was wait until someone, anyone, stopped by who wanted to try her treats. So that’s what Callie did. She sat on the stool behind the counter, which was comically tiny compared to the busty baker, and waited… and waited… and waited.

With no activity in or around the shop, it didn’t take long before a feeling of lethargy took over the monstrous Zoroark. Rellow, who was kept awake by his own intensifying hunger, watched as Callie slowly nodded off while reclining in her seat, head bowing and eyes struggling to stay open. Soon, she went from dozing off to a full-on nap as her eyes drooped shut. And right at that moment, Rellow decided he couldn’t take it anymore. There was no way he could let the threat of that beast of a Zoroark stop him from getting his hands on one of the cupcakes. At his size, just one would probably fill him up for a day or two!

Without thinking much about the risk, Rellow made his way down to the floor, hopping from shelf to shelf during his frantic descent. The counter that the admired cupcakes were sitting on was still a ways away, Rellow would have to make his way past Callie’s towering form first. As he scampered down from his high perch, the change in perspective caused Callie to start looking more and more like the menacing giant all of the rumors said she was, her broad form causing her to seem even more imposing.

Rellow made sure to keep a good eye on Callie as he finally hit the ground, the floor of the bakery expanding out like a massive landscape in front of him, with Callie acting as its lookout. For now she was sleeping peacefully, but Rellow was confident that he would be in and out like a flash, no distractions.

After a surprisingly quick dash across the floor, Rellow was able to reach the foot of the massive wooden obstacle that was the counter. He had a long climb ahead of him, but he knew it would be oh-so worth it. The hungry lizard pointed his snout upward and sniffed the air with vigor, expecting that sweet scent of baked goods to grace his senses, but was hit with a much more powerful scent, a thick and pungent musk that had suddenly surrounded Rellow. Before he could even parse that strong scent however, Rellow felt something splash down onto his head, a warm liquid with a reeking aroma that instantly drenched the puny lizard. Rellow sputtered in disgust as that overwhelming smell stuck to him and spun in place, immediately finding himself face-to-face with the source of that infiltrating musk.

Towering over Rellow like the highest mountains were the bottoms of a pair of paws, belonging to none other than the giantess of a Zoroark dozing off high above him. Callie’s paws were thick, cushioned well by a layer of gray fur and plump red paw pads. Three hefty toes hung above Rellow, catching him in their shadow as they fidgeted idly. It was a stunning, almost threatening sight to behold, one that made Rellow remember that just one of Callie’s toes could easily dwarf his entire body, but what really caught Rellow off guard was that smell.

The entire underside of Callie’s paws were coated in a blanket of perspiration, beads of sweat rolling down the curves of her paw pads and falling down in droves, splashing down and forming puddles on the floor beneath her. Rellow was already unfortunate to be marked by the foul precipitation, and soaked in the smell of Callie’s sweaty paws. A day’s worth of built-up musk mixed with Callie’s natural, oddly-sweet vanilla scent, combined to envelop Rellow in a steamy, almost mesmerizing atmosphere. Rellow knew he had to get out of there as soon as possible, but he just couldn’t bring himself to scurry up and away from that reeking fragrance. Rellow grew increasingly flustered as he nosed the air, telling himself that it was just out of curiosity, not even realizing that his legs were moving him closer and closer to the towering wall that was Callie’s resting paws.

It was at that instant that Callie began to stir, losing her balance on a stool that was way too small for her. As her eyes snapped open, Callie’s paw slammed against the ground as she steadied herself.

“I… fell asleep again.” The Zoroark muttered to herself, now wide awake. She quickly shook any remaining drowsiness off and got back on her feet, picking up the tray to put it out at the front of the store, oblivious to the tiny passenger she was taking with her.

Rellow had no time to move, no time to even think before Callie’s sole crashed down onto him, filling his view with nothing but the light-red pad of her sole. In an instant, his whole body was pressed deep into her paw pad, sinking into it as if he was a sticker on the bottom of her foot. The pressure was intense, hitting Rellow all at once and knocking all the air out of his lungs. For a brief second, Rellow wondered if he would be crushed under Callie’s hefty weight but, in that same second, he felt the massive paw lift off the ground again and began to feel a wave of relief wash over him. That was, until he realized that not only was Callie completely unaware she had stepped on the speck of a lizard, but he was also stuck to the bottom of her paw, the layer of sweat adhering Rellow to Callie’s sole.

While Calie was focused on carrying the tray of cupcakes through her bakery, Rellow was being battered and grinded with each footstep. Rellow was thankful that Callie’s pads were pillowy enough to provide him with some cushion, especially since he had no idea if was ever gonna be able to escape. No matter how much he squirmed, Rellow’s arms and legs were thoroughly buried into the baker’s squishy beans. There was also that dizzying scent, Callie’s already intense musk only getting stronger with each step she took. Every desperate, though very much needed, breath was filled with that horribly pungent odor. Slowly but surely, that thick aroma clouded Rellow’s mind, taking over all his thoughts, so much so that he barely registered Callie’s voice booming above him. “This itch is annoying.”

Callie set the tray down next to the window at the front of the bakery and once again, a weightless feeling took over Rellow as her paw lifted high up into the air. Without even looking, still ignorant to her bug-sized trespasser, Callie reached down a hand and dug one of her scarily sharp claws into her own paws. Rellow’s eyes widened as that giant probing digit effortlessly peeled him off of Callie’s pudgy pad. While Rellow was worried about falling all the way to the hard floor below, he was quickly shoved someplace even worse. Roughly and for no real reason, Callie’s finger moved from the bottom of her foot to the nook between two of her massive toes. Rellow, who was clinging to that long claw out of pure instinct, was quickly jammed in between two thick walls of sweat-soaked fur, clamped hard between them as Callie set her foot back down.

Rellow felt like he was in a sauna, plunged into the incredibly humid atmosphere between Callie’s toes. The two thick digits grinded and rubbed more of that excessive perspiration all over his body with every small fidget that Callie made as she went about her day. It spilled down his face and all over his clothes, making it impossible to get away from the musk they carried. Rellow wriggled and squirmed as much as he could, but there was no space to move. He was trapped, with nothing to see but those gray-furred walls and nothing to breathe but Callie’s sweltering scent. As Rellow came to this realization, his consciousness began to drift elsewhere as Callie’s long work hours droned on and on.

The small wooden stool let out a pained creak as Callie dropped herself onto it. She had spent hours on her feet, baking and cleaning, a small break was well-deserved at this point. Not to mention that itch that kept pestering her. Callie let out a sigh as she idly scratched her paw. Another day coming to an end and not a single customer in sight… Just as Callie was about to become lost in her own thoughts, she felt something squirming against her finger, wedged between her toes. Quickly, she pulled the figure out from that damp crevice, finally freeing the small, green lizard dangling between her fingers by his tail.

It took Rellow a few seconds to realize what was going on, too dazed to do anything about being spotted. When he finally came to, he was lying flat on his back on the palm of Callie’s hand, taking comfort in how cushiony it was. That comfort all went away when Rellow slowly opened his eyes, the first thing he saw was the sharp tip of Callie’s claw closing in on his tiny form, with Callie’s face right behind, her wide eyes beaming down on him like shining spotlights. Her expression was blank and wholly unreadable, staring down at Rellow as if he was some lab rat and her claw was about to dig deep into him.

“W-wait!” Rellow cried out, trying to hide himself while Callie’s claw was just inches away. The Zoroark’s sharp digits gleamed in the light of the bakery as they closed in, casually plucking a long strand of gray fur off from Rellow’s black tee before drawing back.

“...Huh?” Rellow looked back up at Callie, who was simply staring back at him, though apparently without intention to harm him. Rellow just stared back into her yellow eyes, not sure what to say. After a very awkward silence, it was Callie who finally spoke up.

“Are you… okay?” Her voice was soft, but still made Rellow jump. The lizard immediately got on his knees and put his hands together as if he was begging to the Zoroark for forgiveness. “I’m sorry! All I wanted was just one cupcake, please don’t hurt me!” Rellow bowed his head and braced himself for the giantess to close her fist, squeezing him in a tight grip.

Callie blinked. “You wanted one of my sweets?”

Rellow started to lower his guard just a bit, hearing a complete lack of anger in Callie’s voice. “Well they smelled really good and I was getting hungry so I thought I’d just take… one…” Rellow winced.

Callie continued to stare him down in silence. Then, without a word, she stood up from her seat and began to walk across her bakery. Rellow quickly clung to one of her fingers, but Callie’s gait was slow and gentle, being careful not to let her tiny passenger fall. With that same gentle poise, Rellow was placed down on the floor in front of the windowsill before the Zoroark grabbed one of the cupcakes from the tray she had set out earlier. She then kneeled down to place the treat in Rellow’s arms, that simple action enough to send strong tremors through the floor beneath him. The cupcake was just as big as Rellow was, but surprisingly light enough that Rellow was able to carry it easily.

“You can take it.”

Rellow was once again lost in the delightfully sugary smell of the cupcake in his arms. “Really? I can?” He replied with clear excitement in his voice.

“Yes, and it can serve as… an apology for… what happened before.”

Callie looked away for a brief moment and Rellow saw what might have been a blush on her face.

“Uh, okay! Th-thank you very much!” Rellow yelped as he quickly dashed towards the entrance. RIght before he left, Rellow looked over his shoulder and called out to Callie. “I’ll make sure to stop by again!”

Callie waved goodbye as Rellow bounded out of her bakery, and Rellow left with an unforgettable experience filled with unforgettable scents.
