I sat in front of my computer all alone playing a random strategy game, the many soldiers I amassed plowing through the opposing sides' base defenses while taking only minimal losses from their turrets. With victory all but assured, I pulled up Steam overlay for less than a second to check what time it is. “October thirtieth. Eleven fifty-six PM.” In only four minutes it would technically be Halloween. The date didn’t mean much to me though. I didn't have any friends to go with, I lived alone and even if I wanted to go by myself, I was actually a big scaredy-cat. Not literally a cat though.
Mostly what Halloween meant to me was shutting off all the lights that could be seen from the front of the house and ignoring the knocks of any who did happen to anyway. My negative thoughts made me a bit peckish, so I paused the game and headed for the kitchen. The long dark hallway from my room to there always unnerved me, I flicked the light switch and light cut through the darkness in an instant. Being an avid gamer, the simple action reminded me of completing an objective in Amnesia: The Dark Descent and having my sanity recover. I chuckled at the thought while walking to the kitchen’s light switch and having the same thing happen like in the hallway.
I opened the cupboard above the oven and scanned it side to side. I didn't have much but what I did have was usually simple things that could be eaten by itself and cooked very quickly. Things like cans of chili-beans, cereal and ramen. I decided on the ramen, as all I had to do was pour in hot water. What can I say? I was feeling lazy. I strode over to my old water cooler and peeled back the paper lid. I pulled down the red handle and let the hot liquid pour in. After the small task I went to grab a fork while the mix brewed. Fishing through the drawer in front of the microwave I saw the time was midnight exactly on its digital clock. “Happy Halloween.” I thought a little less than enthusiastically. I made my way back to my room when I noticed the kitchen lights had been turned off.
“Did I turn them off?” My memory was always a bit fuzzy when I stayed up but I was pretty sure I did not. Ignoring the situation all together, I fast-walked back to my computer after having been thoroughly creeped out. Placing my ramen down I immediately quit my game and went to YouTube. The voices of my favorite let's players in the otherwise silent house would calm me down. I clicked on one of my favorite videos of theirs but it wouldn't load. “Great. Just what I needed to happen right now.” I tried again with the related videos only to learn that all of my internet was down when the page crashed.
Before I had a chance to even consider what could be going on I heard what sounded like...footsteps. From my swivel-chair I looked into the hall, still bright with light. I held my breath. “Probably just hearing things.” I listened in carefully to make sure. Silence. The dull hum of the fridge could be heard all the way from here. “I’m going crazy.” I muttered to myself. I got up to check down the hall. Nothing unusual, the bathroom door in the middle of the hall was closed and farther down the darkness of night rested in the living room out of the lights encompassing glow.
I squinted and saw what looked like an outline of a person against the far living room wall. Almost sure it was my nerve racked mind playing tricks on me, I rubbed at my eyes before looking again. The figure was still there. And even worse, it crept out of my sight. A chill of pure terror ran down my spine. I back peddled into my room, almost tripping and slammed the door shut. “What the heck was that! That was no imaginary figment, that looked real as all heck! What if it wants to kill me!” I walked over to my high shelves where I reached up to get a feel for my survival knife. I grabbed hold of it once found and turned around, pulling it out of its sheath at the same time.
My heart pounded in my chest. I pondered many things in just one second. “Do I really stand a chance against that thing? Is there even anything there at all? If I die, will anyone find me? Don't think like that! I’ll be fine. I’m just imagining things.” I closed in the distance over to the door. Shakily I reached toward the knob, twisting it clockwise. I opened the door. Slowly it creaked open.
The hallway lights were off. Standing there was a shadowy blob silhouette with dim red eyes. I was frozen in terror. I could only watch helplessly as it’s arm stretched across the wall like a shadow towards the light switch. Its slender fingers tormented me by slowly toying around it. The light flicked off, and I screamed.
My bedroom light turned on again.
“Hahahahahahaha! You should've seen the look on your face! Hahahaha hah!” My ephemeral friend chortled on the floor, her shadowy black form taking a more solid shape with distinguishable features of a black cat. I dropped my knife and clutched my chest where my beating heart rested under. “Jesus Sohl! You nearly scared me to death this time!” “You—you would think you would remember then! Aahah! I come to visit you every year! Hahaha!” she rebutted whilst laughing. She did have a point. Where to even begin with her though.
Sohl was, to put bluntly, the “Spirit of Halloween”. She could take the form of any of the classic Halloween monster motifs as long as it was based off of her true form, a black cat. For example she could become a ghost-cat, demon-cat, vampire-cat, zombie-cat, or in this case, a shadow-cat and so on. We met only two Halloweens ago when she took a particular interest in me. You see, on this same night two years ago, I was the only one not trick-or-treating in the whole neighborhood. She took this as an extreme insult and decided I deserved a good scare. Only, she failed spectacularly when she decided the best way to scare me would be to use her otherworldly powers to shrink me and make me believe I would be her paw slave for all eternity.
...Yeah, it's like it sounds. She learned that year that some humans found that concept to be, exciting, to say the least. Having lost her leverage of being scary, she told me all about herself. Oh, and lastly before I bore you. Like her title implies, she only comes around on Halloween. Probably why she's here rolling on the floor laughing at midnight to maximize her time spent with me.
“Yeah yeah you got me. Again.” I gave up while sitting down on my chair to rest my heart; “Why exactly are you here so early for this time? Do you need something from me?” She stopped laughing finally and let her inky black form seep out of her, forming her shadow while assuming her true furry cat form. Her glowing yellow eyes glazed over to me. “Well, I only get to really talk to you once a year. I thought I’d get right to it.” When she walked it was almost as if her feet didn't move, making it look as if she glided over to my bed to sit down.
“Yeah right. You just want to try and convince me again to go trick-or-treating this year. I already told you no the last two times. We can still hang out though.” She pouted at me, having had her intentions found out. “C’mon, it’s fun! You get free candy and get to dress up and best of all, get to scare people.” she spoke with a venom, baring her fangs for show. “Sounds boring.” I replied, unfazed by her antics. Again she pouted, but this time a clever smile replaced this all over her face as an apparent thought came to her. “Really now? Okay then, that's too bad. I did have a couple of your favorite candies ready for you.” she snapped her fingers and some clean cut Kit-Kat bars appeared in her palm in a puff of smoke. “So what? I can just go buy some if I really want one.” Another snap, and an ebony black footstool appeared in midair where she rested her paws on.
She yawned while stretching out. “Tell me? How did that speech of mine you loved so much go again when we first met?” A cold chill ran down my spine, I had an inkling of what she was about to do as I looked on. “What are you getting at?” I asked her. “Hmm. I think it began with Foolish Mortal. Or was it Ungrateful Coward?” She continued on ignoring me, all the while she leaned forward, placing one of the individual Kit-Kat bar strips that made up a whole brick between her padded toes loosely. I squirmed in my chair, unable to look away as she tapped it down deeper with a single finger. “You know this isn’t fair at all.” I argued. “For your unwillingness to partake in the joyous and frightful Halloween festivities of my holiday which I bequeath unto you every year...” She finished up placing a total of three single bars between the four plump toes of her left paw; “...you are condemned to be my paw slave for all of eternity! Crawling like a lowly ant before my feet and lapping at them forever more.” Her right paw now mirrored her left, a total of six Kit-Kat strips between her eight black fluffy toes, each of them rubbing up against her inviting pink pads.
“And how did you respond?” It took me a couple of seconds to register that she said something to me. I was mesmerized by the way her toes wiggled around the suddenly tempting candy, wishing in the back of my head that I would trade places with it. “Huh? Oh. W-Well, that’s a trick question, I didn’t. When you opened your eyes, you thought I had somehow escaped. When you looked down. I was, erm, already hugging your paws and kissing them.” I answered quietly while a blush filled my cheeks from utter embarrassment. “So? How badly do you want these candies now?” she asked in a way like she already knew the answer. “As badly as you want me to go out this Halloween night.” She raised an eyebrow. “Do we have a deal?” I scooted over my swivel-chair where my face then rested at a perfect height before her floating footrest and paws. “Yes, fine. You win. But I still find this unfair.” I happily accepted.
Her paws were mere inches away from my face. I could see the chocolate had just very barely begun to melt from her paws' radiant heat, bits of the single bars had rubbed off because of this, coating the inner walls of her toes with a thin chocolate layer. “What’s the matter? It’s gonna’ all melt away if you just stare at it like that. Not like that would stop you from licking it up though.” she teased while giggling. I took her advice and decided to make my first move. I mouthed towards the candy on the farthest outer side of her paw on my left; her right paw by logic. Cautiously I placed my lips and teeth around the part of the bar that stuck out from between her toes. I bit down on it carefully before dragging it out from between those lovely toes of hers.
With my prize claimed, I brought it into my mouth and munched on the chocolate treat. The thought of eating food off of the lowest part of her body got me very heated all over. “Only five more to go, paw slave! Hahaha!” she teased. I blushed hard while doing the same with the middle bar, sucking it out and eating it. I moved on to the last one on the inner edge of her right paw. When I started to pull it out though she scrunched her toes, preventing me from doing that. “Eat it from my paw.” she commanded. I ate it down until only a tiny bitten nub stuck out from between the plump digits. I pressed my face into her soft padded paw, trying to get at it with my tongue.
I really had to lick between the plump walls, dragging it out little by little with my licks as I tasted her along with the candy. “Did I call you an ant before? Cause’ right now you feel more like a worm with that tongue of yours!” she taunted. “She’s comparing me to insects. Small pathetic bugs that go unnoticed under her heavy footfalls and end up stomped flat.” I could only moan in reply to her assertion, loving this too much. I moved on to the paw right of me, her left paw. It went down the same way for the most part, eating the candies from between her toes and giving a few quick kisses here and there on her toes.
“Very good paw slave! But aren't you forgetting something?” In between her toes was leftover chocolate sticking to her fur and on the edges of her toe pads. I started for them but was stopped by a wave of her hand. “Na ah ah! I’ve got a better idea for this occasion.” She snapped her fingers and I was enveloped in a puff of smoke. When the smoke cleared I was standing at the same height of her paws on the footrest, my head at exact level with her toes. “Get to it mortal!” she boomed. I lapped at the chocolate on her two middle toe pads, licking the soft pink leather surface under it quite a few times even after the chocolate was gone. “H-Hey! That tickles!” she fidgeted on the bed a little. I stuck my head in the gap of her toes, lapping at the coarse and heavy chocolate covered fur. It was a little saltier than normal from mixing with tiny droplets of her sweat. I couldn't help but moan from the thought of food from her paws entering my stomach. She must've known this too as she spoke up. “I see you're enjoying my special addition to their recipe! Make sure you swallow down every last chocolate crumb and sweat drop!”
When I was all done there I rested my head between her two plump toes, the fur slick and matted from my saliva. I looked up at her face from here. She actually seemed to be blushing for some reason, her toes tensed around my head tightly. “W-What are you looking at me from there for? G-Get back to licking my paws!” A thought had popped in my head that hadn't before. “Does she actually enjoy having a tiny person under her paws? And not just to tease and torment me?” I continued licking all around her left paw, kissing the sides of her toes to let her know I appreciated her letting me indulge in them. I then moved on to the middle toes of her right paw. When I finished licking the chocolate from them, I did the same thing as before, putting my head in between them.
Her normally impish face got all shy again. Before she could boss me around this time, I asked her something. “Sohl, do you like paws like I do? Having me under them that is.” Her face turned away. “So?” It was an answer that told me she meant yes, but didn't want to admit it. “It’s just that I’m the first friend of yours that isn't supernatural in over a millennia most likely and I happen to like paws too. Seems kinda like an opportunity you shouldn't waste.” She grunted in reply. “Mph. K-Kiss my toes like you did a couple seconds ago.” I did as asked, kissing the very base between her toes where they connected. She shuddered and squirmed in delight. “D-Don't think this means you g-get out of trick-or-treating tonight!” she spoke back between breaths. To think that laying my lips on such a miniscule part of her would have such world shaking effects! From my perspective of course.
“O-Oh my, would you look at the time!” She spoke, regaining her lost composure like she had an ace up her sleeve; “One AM already? We wouldn't want you to pull an all-nighter and be sleepy for tonight would we?” She snapped her fingers and her left paw was covered in a black and orange striped sock, its matching pair in her hand. She snatched me into her giant furry hand as she then dangled me over it. “I’m sure you don't mind me doing this right?” She dropped me in. I slid down and landed on where I had to guess her toes rested in the sock. “While you use my fluffy toes for a bed, I’ll be using yours.” A loud shuffling sound came from where I entered. A huge wall of furry black paw crawled toward me, pressing me against it and the sock where then I barely had enough room to move across her toe arches. I could hear her lay across my bed as the springs creaked.
“If you wake up hungry and I’m not up yet, I placed you in the sock with my paw that still has bits of chocolate stuck between my toes. If you get thirsty there's always my paw sweat. Anyways, I can’t wait till tonight! Sweet dreams!” I got into a comfortable position resting parallel underneath her toes. Before I decided to hit the hay, or in this case paw, I gave one of her middle toes a good long and wet kiss right in the center of her toe print. “D-Dumb human.” she replied in a shy, loving way. Her toes scrunching around me in a best attempt for a hug.
Maybe Halloween wasn't so bad after all.
