A Size Matter

There were never any exacts in science, Niels firmly believed. It was all about trial and error. Fucking around, finding out, and documenting it. That last part was crucial, otherwise you were just screwing around in a lab coat and not really accomplishing anything.

Niels reflected on this as he gazed at the huge world above him, now no bigger than a mouse, his shrinking ray on the floor next to him, still at its full size. The test had been a minor success: it could definitely shrink things, albeit affecting the user rather than the target.

Of course, he’d forgotten to write down specifically what to do to fix this problem before he used the device, but the odds of it happening were so low, it didn't seem to matter. “Next time, Niels,” he said to himself, twisting his mouth in thought, “notate first, test SECOND.”

His thought process was interrupted as he heard the sound of his door opening, and footsteps coming toward him. “NIELS, ARE YOU IN HERE?” The minuscule scientist watched as this black-plumed avian assistant entered the lab, looking around and adjusting her glasses.

Oh, thank god, at least she was here. She would be able to fix all this and get him back to normal. Niels stood proudly where he was and waved his arm in the air a few times, trying to get his assistant’s attention, which was promptly ignored in favor of the fallen shrink ray.

“AH. I SEE.” she strode over, picking the shrink ray off the floor and looking about, “NIELS? DID YOU USE-? WAIT.” She stopped suddenly, hopping back and checking the soles of her feet, “OH NO, DID I- NO, OH GOOD.” She adjusted her glasses again, peering toward the floor.

Now she was able to pick up Niels’ more insistent hand waving. Stepping forward carefully, she crouched down, “LOOKING A BIT DOWN TODAY, NIELS. SOMETHING I CAN DO?” she gave a little smile.

“Why yes!” Neils called up, “You can make these adjustments! Listen carefully!”

She listened as closely as she could, certain that she had heard him correctly and gave a nod, “YOU CAN COUNT ON ME, NIELS.” With that, she set the shrink ray on a nearby workbench and began to make the tweaks.

Niels breathed a sigh of relief. At least he could rely on her.

Within minutes, she had pulled the gun from the workbench. “ALL FINISHED!” she announced proudly before aiming the shrink ray at Niels. Taking a deep breath, she squeezed the trigger, squeezing her eyes shut as it emitted a bright light.

When she opened them, Niels was gone.

“THAT WASN’T SUPPOSED TO HAPPEN.” she frowned, stepping forward, looking at the floor.

Having been shrunk to the size of an ant, Niels was left to flee from his unaware assistant’s foot as it dropped toward the floor - and him.

It was going to be a long day… if he survived.
