Ministry of Magical Creature Containment and Study

Research department, Eastern High Security Wing

From the desk of Dr. Kohnaar Sevinko, Magical Creature Research Overseer

Subject : 6641 Codename : Devourer

[I have included a copy of several file entries created prior to the incident for your contemplation.]

6641 Devourer is a dragon of undetermined species or origin. Subject is male, bipedal, wingless, and muscular and varies in height and weight. Devourer's scales are primarily gray, with his body being partially adorned with what are either tattoos or natural markings of gold. His eyes are red in color, while his palms and soles of his hands and feet, nipples, genitals and underside of his tail are black. Devourer possesses the ability to absorb size and mass from other lifeforms through touch, reducing the size of his victims and increasing his own in turn. His minimal recorded height is currently a quarter of an inch although it is not known if his size can decrease below this. Maximum attainable height unknown. The subject is also seemingly immune to physical or magical wounding- all offensive blows merely cause him to lose accumulated size and mass in proportion to the strength of the attack, leaving no visible mark on the subject's body. Though seemingly incapable of speech, Devourer is sentient and possesses at least an average level of intelligence. He is hostile and if given an opportunity, will drain the size of nearby lifeforms as he pleases, usually eating any victim that becomes small enough for him to swallow whole. Over time, without exposure to any victims, Devourer will diminish in size and mass until he reaches the aforementioned size of a quarter inch, when he will cease to shrink any further. Subject does not seem to require food or water to remain alive- the research team believe his body absorbs ambient energy from his surroundings.

[Year NE 1007, 7-12]

Devourer was captured as the result of a covert operation in [location redacted] on [date redacted] after consuming most of [location redacted]'s population. The subject had grown to an estimated height of two hundred and thirty feet before shots from several groups of cannons were able to reduce him to a more manageable size, at which point he was further reduced by close-range combat measures until he could be easily restrained for transport and imprisonment.

[Full mission report available by request]

[NE 1007, 8-27]

Initially it was believed that the subject's size draining arcane touch was limited to his hands- this was revealed to be incorrect when, in the process of inspecting him, a researcher was robbed of a few inches of her height while in contact only with the restrained Devourer's tail. Several magic nullification spells were applied to the subject in response, none of which had any confirmed effect.

[NE 1007, 8-29]

Devourer, at a height of four and three-quarter inches, was placed in a vice and pressed to the device's maximum ability. When the vice was opened, the subject was found motionless at a size of a quarter inch. Believing him to be deceased after several minutes without movement, the same researcher who had previously lost three inches of height to Devourer disregarded safety measures and handled him without the provided pair of forceps. While being inspected in her palm, the subject suddenly sprang to live and quickly hid himself up her sleeve, taking advantage of the direct contact with her body to drain her of her height again. Before the researcher could get him out of her clothing, Devourer was able to work his way up to her shoulder and get a grip on her neck, before a security officer entered the research room and attempted to engage him. Devourer, now at an estimated height of three feet, simply grabbed onto him and absorbed his mass before consuming the officer and leaving the research room. While attempting to escape, he consumed three members of the research team and, at a height of approximately fourteen feet, used his incredible strength to break through a wall to the outside, where he was met with cannon fire and subdued. The surviving researcher was discovered in the pile of her still normal-sized clothing, at a height just below three inches. She was otherwise unharmed.

[NE 1007, 10-1]

The tattoos/markings on the subject's body have been fully mapped and recorded. The marks, although stylistic in nature, appear to be natural features of the subject's body. Awaiting analysis of markings for possible meanings or a clue to Devourer's origin.

[NE 1008, 1-4]

Devourer, in a controlled scenario, was allowed contact with a victim for the purpose of testing his absorbtion ability. The victim, a prisoner from the capital, was a large, female Drakespire warrior who, before exposure to the subject, was six feet, eleven inches in height. Through contact with the tip of Devourer's tail, her mass was drained until she was left barely two millimeters high. The research team could not determine if Devourer was unable to extract more mass from her, or was simply unwilling to do so. From the stolen mass, the subject was able to grow to a height of four feet, eleven inches, and was reduced back to a small size with repeated strikes from an officer's club when he attempted to get out of his restraints. Devourer does not seem to grow in direct relation to how much size and mass he absorbs- further study of his ability is required.

Indirect communication with the dragoness was possible through the researcher who survived Devourer's first escape attempt. Though very small, she seemed to have suffered no other negative effects as a result of exposure to the subject's magic.

[NE 1008, 2-7]

Field researchers obtained information regarding the subject's body markings. Nearly identical markings were discovered on wall paintings inside an ancient temple near [location redacted]. Several dragons, seemingly of Devourer's species, were displayed in the artwork with markings very much like his. The other physical traits of the dragons matched the subject, though notably, the subject has an extra pair of horns which the dragons in the artwork lacked. Local natives claim the dragons who used to reside in the region no longer exist as a species. Carbon dating determined the temple to be over eight thousand years old.

[NE 1008, 2-19]

Devourer somehow bypassed his restraints and almost managed to make direct contact with a researcher. The researcher was able to react in time to conjure a telekinetic barrier to restrain the subject. Subject was trapped under an upturned jar until his restraints were improved after a small modification. Research was continued without incident.

[NE 1008, 2-22]

Linguists and translators finished decoding the patterns of the subject's body markings and applied their understanding of the ancient language of the subject's species to learn his name.

Solrune.

Solrune appears to be the last living member of his species. Whether his mass absorbtion ability is a trait of his species or something unique to him is not known. Further research of the lost dragon race was ordered by the council.

[NE 1008, 3-10]

A counterspell to reverse Solrune's mass absorbtion was tested. The dragoness, who had been previously reduced to two millimeters in height, was used as a test subject. She was placed inside a magically sealed room with five expert-level mages who combined their powers to fuel the spell. Rapidly, the dragoness grew in size to fourteen feet, seven inches tall, but as a result all the mages were reduced to the same small size she had been stuck at.

It seems the reversal spell worked too well- in opposition to Solrune's ability, which drains mass from the target and gives it to the caster, the counterspell took the mass of the casters and applied it to the target.

Further "cure spells" were deemed too risky, with researchers being ordered to put such developments on hold. The shrunken researcher, who had acted as keeper for the dragoness, was now given the mages to watch over. The dragoness was permitted to remain at the ministry as a security officer and laborer.

[NE 1008, 4-1]

The ministry received a letter from the desk of the Wolf King offering to purchase Solrune for the amount of thirteen and a half million gold pieces.

In spite of the ministry's need for more funding, the offer was rejected for reasons of public safety.

[NE 1008, 5-7]

Two researchers, five security officers and [number redacted] civilian contractors were shrunken and eaten by Solrune during his latest escape attempt. Two walls and a security fence were demolished as he attempted to break out of the high security wing at an estimated height of twenty seven feet. Fortunately, the dragoness security officer, by throwing an explosive gas tank was able to stun Solrune long enough for the cannons to adjust their aim, and barrage him down to a manageable size. How he escaped his restraints in this instance is not known.

Four uneaten victims, all contractors, were also found in the aftermath. Two had been reduced to around half their natural height, one was left a little more than a foot tall, and the last had been reduced to a single inch in height. The last one was, unfortunately, later stepped on by the dragoness security officer.

[NE 1008, 5-19]

Solrune was given another victim. A fairly large, green forest dragon from the capital prison was sent into a secure, locked observation room with Solrune. The prisoner attempted to toy with Solrune but, upon noticing the mass absorbtion taking effect, attempted to crush Solrune, first with his hands and then underfoot. Solrune was unaffected and managed to grab onto the dragon's ankle, and maintain his grip on the prisoner until his victim was small enough to be swallowed. The absorbed mass increased Solrune's height to a little over three feet.

For the next several days, Solrune was left in the observation room under constant watch. It took exactly five days, seven hours and twenty four minutes for Solrune to return to his minimum size after absorbing the prisoner's mass.

[NE 1008, 6-4]

An attempt was made by two elite mages to transfer Solrune's soul into the body of a harmless field mouse. Their mana reserves were exhausted before they made any progress whatsoever.

Later a third elite mage, a weasel, attempted to sacrifice his own body and directly trade souls with Solrune, hoping to trap him in a body he could do little harm with. Whatever magic prevents Solrune from harm seems to nullify a soul transferral entirely- further study of subject's resistance is needed.

[NE 1008, 6-26]

Solrune again escaped his restraints and consumed a single security officer before being beaten down to size and restrained once more. Escape was blamed on minor damage to the small wrist restraints intended for holding Solrune at his minimum size.

[NE 1008, 7-7]

After the number of personnel lost to Solrune, the ministry decided more drastic safety measures be taken to prevent the subject from consuming anybody else. It was decided that a specialized rocket would be built to launch Solrune into space.

[NE 1008, 7-27]

Solrune escaped confinement once again and initially evaded notice by remaining small. He later emerged from the security officer's sleeping quarters having eaten seven sleeping officers after draining them of their mass. At a height of eighteen feet, he broke through an outside wall and was immediately met with cannon fire and subdued.

Work continues on the rocket.

[NE 1008, 8-15]

The rocket was completed within the time and budget constraints set by the council. The finished vehicle measured exactly four meters in height with varying width along the fuselage. The craft was designed to be lightweight and streamlined so as to climb out of the earth's atmosphere as quickly as possible. Solrune, at his minimum size, was placed in the hollow compartment near the top of the vehicle and within minutes, the rocket's boosters were activated. The rocket's launch was initially a success.

However, at a height of several thousand feet, one of the rocket's boosters malfunctioned, and the vehicle's trajectory became altered, re-orienting the craft until it returned to the ground, smashing into the earth several dozen miles from the launch site. Security officers escorted two researchers to the crash site, where the splintered remains of the rocket were found. The reinforced compartment that had housed Solrune was found heavily damaged, with multiple breakages big enough for the quarter-inch dragon to fit through.

Solrune's whereabouts are unknown.
