===Incident Report:===

At 1230, my team, Testing Team Alpha, was running tests on the Spatial Distortion Device (informally known as the Portal Placer amongst the team). It was originally known as [REDACTED DUE TO LEGAL PROCEEDINGS], but a lawsuit from [REDACTED DUE TO LEGAL PROCEEDINGS] Corporation lead to the nickname being changed.

Research assistant Tegon was using the device for a wide array of tests in how it would advance his movement. We had set up a small obstacle course that relied on him to dynamically place portals to proceed past obstacles and reach the goal. A test not only of the device, but of how a sapient may use it in how they move and operate at speed.

Near the end of the course, Tegon had to rapidly fire a portal towards a wall while running ahead at the wall at full speed, and another on another wall. He was to run through the first portal, fly through the second portal, and use his speed to clear a large gap. The test was all about conservation of momentum.

The initial portal was placed without incident, appearing as an opaque oval, as it lacked a second portal to link to. At the time, it was nothing more than a wall. Tegon quickly fired the second portal, yet it failed to materialise at the destination.

However, to our shock, the link somehow managed to form, with the first portal opening. Through the first portal something was seen. I, or the other researchers, didn’t see what it led to. Only Research Head Alix saw it, and only a glimpse, saying:

“It was like a vast world with wide open plains, with gigantic … shapes, I don’t know, coming out of the ground. But there were … towers? Vast towers, taller than any skyscraper or mountain I’ve ever seen. They were side by side, as if they were giants? I’ve never even imagined anything like what I saw.”

Unfortunately, the cameras placed to record the test did not have an angle through the first portal, and so we have to rely on this eyewitness claim.

Tegon was running too fast. He screamed but couldn’t stop himself before going through the portal. We could hear his screaming through the portal before it decayed in a few seconds and was gone. Immediately, we searched the surrounding area, thinking that the second portal had been displaced, but couldn’t find anything. We contacted the security team to do a full sweep of the building yet found nothing. In Tegon’s attempts to slow himself down he had dropped the Spatial Distortion Device, so we were able to recover it. Despite repeated attempts we were unable to replicate the strange effect. All portals formed as normal.

We then connected the unit to a computer to run diagnostics and try to diagnose the fault. We ran through logs of the inbuilt computer at the exact time of the incident, and the only error we found was the following:

[WARNING] 18/07/2020 12:33:44 PM - MEMORY OVERFLOW DETECTED, BLOCK 0x8F5516FF OVERWRITTEN

This block contains the size parameter for the second portal, controlling how large it would appear. It seems that in very rare instances, a previous section can overflow and overwrite this block. A closer inspection of the logs reveal that the second portal size was set to something microscopic in the millimetric range.

However, we are unsure as to what effect this would have. All of our studies have run under the implicit assumption that the two portals would be of the same size. The idea of there being a mismatch in size is impossible. Perhaps the displacement caused some issue, and led to Tegon being transported to another world? Efforts to replicate this issue are ongoing. We have also reached out to the Lambda section of the research facility to use their experimental devices to try and find Tegon, yet have not received any word back.

I implore you to convince the Lambda facility to assist us. If Alix’s reports are true, and Tegon is in a land of ‘giants’, then I gravely fear for his safety. If the safety of a man does not move you, then perhaps profits will. If we were to find this land and explore it, and these ‘giants’ were willing to serve as combatants, think of the potential with the US Army. Does that motivate you?

Dr Janet Onyx, Research Supervisor

Note: Tell the cleaning team to pick up their game. I saw an ant scurrying across the floor today in the lab. They better clean up the ant’s squished remains by the time I get back.
